This is not a definitive list as all weddings are not the same. However, the key thing to bear in mind is that the majority of people want weddings on a Saturday in the summer months - and there aren't that many of them in a year. Add to this the increasing competition for venues from those organising 21sts, 40ths, wedding anniversaries, etc and you can see why you need to book key ingredients as soon as possible. The more you can organise early the less stressful the day will be. However, everyone does find organising weddings stressful so be prepared for this and keep calm!
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
• Set the date - be a bit flexible at this stage
• Set the budget - and establish who will pay for what
• Choose your attendants
• Decide who you want to and need to invite - this will affect your choice of venue.
• Consider the wedding ceremony and reception type and location (many venues are booked up 18 months in advance, particularly for the summer months)
ONE YEAR BEFORE:
• If you haven't booked the venue yet - make it a priority!
• Consider your wedding style - this can affect everything from dresses to stationery.
• Consider honeymoon plans - this may have a knock-on effect on your budget!
12 MONTHS TO 9 MONTHS AHEAD:
• Start looking for your outfits - allow at least 6 months to have a wedding dress made to measure.
• Start thinking about entertainment - good bands and acts are often booked well ahead.
• Plan any stationery required.
9 MONTHS TO 6 MONTHS AHEAD:
• Book your venue/s if not already done so, and arrange an appointment with the venue manager to discuss the order of the day. This is when you need to find out any likely problems.
• Order invititation stationery and aim to send out at least 6 months before the big day, especially if your wedding date is during a popular holiday period.
• Order wedding oufits and start looking for accessories.
• Book wedding cars, photographers, florists, honeymoon etc (check whether you need jabs or visas, etc for travel and make sure your passport is still valid - if you are changing your name on your passport send your applicatoin in 3 months before you are due to travel.)
6 MONTHS TO 3 MONTHS AHEAD:
• Take out wedding insurance before you start paying any large bills.
• Buy/order wedding rings.
• Arrange order of service with the vicar/registrar and ensure all relevant paperwork is completed.

• Order your cake.
• Buy or confirm all other sundries such as decorations, favours, hired props, marquee, etc.
• Plan/book your hen/stag night if you're having one.
• Arrange an extra accommodation required for guests.
3 MONTHS TO 1 MONTH AHEAD:
• Have your first few fittings for your outfits - ensure your attendants' outfits are also on schedule, or that hiring has been arranged.
• Order all other stationery once Order of Service, menus, etc, have been confirmed.
• Book your rehearsal for a week or a few days before the big day if possible.
4 WEEKS TO 1 WEEK AHEAD:
• Chase any late RSVPs and start on your seating plan.
• Finish all fittings for outfits, ensure you have all accessories, etc.
• Ensure all suppliers are on schedule and that you have delivery dates if necessary.
• Buy any last minute bits and pieces for the venue.
• Book any beauty treatments, hairdressers, manicures, make-up etc.
1 WEEK AHEAD:
• Finalise numbers.
• Collect all outfits.
• Give the rings to the best man.
• Deliver Order of Service sheets to church/venue.
• Write place names and deliver to venue.
• Marquees should be erected this week.
• Pack!
• Have your rehearsal.
THE DAY BEFORE:
• Check all is OK with the venue/s and check final numbers.
