These 17th Century buildings have been tastefully restored and converted. They are part of the estate, which goes with a typically beautiful manor house of the Entre-Douro-e-Minho region. They are situated on a hillside and look out towards mountains. There is a small café a short distance from the property, and Amarante, a picturesque old riverside town whose walls are washed by the Tamega, is only 4km away. A beautiful three arched bridge crosses the river at Amarante and leads to the convent of Sao Goncalo, the patron saint of marriages whose festival in June is especially boisterous. From Amarante you can travel relatively quickly, mostly by motorway, to Oporto; the Douro Valley and the port wine making region are also close at hand. There is a golf course 6km away from the house. Please note that the owner of the manor house does not stay in the manor house when the buildings are occupied by clients but a housekeeper does, and you can arrange domestic services with her for a fee paid locally.
Details of Accommodation
The accommodation is tastefully decorated with 18th and 19th Century antiques and is divided between three separate buildings grouped around the courtyard. The first of these is called the Main House. On the ground floor of this is a sitting room, with comfortable seating for four, a TV and a fireplace; off this room is a twin bedroom with its own bathroom/WC, and a double bedroom with its own bathroom/WC. Stairs rise to the first floor where there are two double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC; these two bedrooms share a covered terrace overlooking the mountains. The main house is linked to the Guest’s Cottage by a covered walkway. Here there are two twin bedrooms each with its own bathroom/WC; one of these bedrooms has a two seater sofa and a child’s bed as well. The kitchen is in a separate building across the courtyard; it has fitted cupboards, a microwave as well as an ordinary oven, a dishwasher and a table to seat 4; there is also a table to seat 10 out on the covered terrace. Covered parking is on the opposite side of the courtyard and next to it is a utility room with washing machine. Outside are large water containers, a bit like ornamental fishponds (N.B. Parents must keep an eye on children). There is a very large swimming pool with Roman steps, which is 20m x 7m. The garden is spacious with lawn, pear trees, orange trees, vines, kiwis, hydrangeas, and roses and with wonderful views of the mountains. Outside July and August, groups of 8 or less can rent the Main House only with the guest’s cottage excluded, at reduced rates; in this instance the guest’s cottage remains empty.
