Situated 6 miles from the County town Thurso the Ulbster is an ideal base for all disciplines of outdoor activity be it walking, riding, shooting, surfing and famously – the fishing of wild Atlantic Salmon and native brown trout. Built in the best tradition of country house hotels the Ulbster Arms retains the charm of it’s 19th century beginnings and yet remains an imposing building. With 26 rooms, all en-suite, and all fully equipped with colour television, direct dial telephone and tea and coffee facilities. The hotel is the centre for the fishing of the River Thurso, one of Scotland’s premier “FLY ONLY” wild Atlantic Salmon rivers with both a spring and autumn run. The river level is controlled by a dam at Loch More, which was installed solely for the improvement of the salmon fishing. Renowned for wild native brown trout the Ulbster Estate lochs and others available locally are waters to keep the most ardent fly fisher well occupied and delighted with baskets regularly averaging over the one pound mark. The hotel can arrange shooting over a wide variety of moors, and all shooting is either over dogs or walking up. Hinds are culled during November and December and to this we add alternate days of low ground shooting.
